We are coming down from the northeast for a day trip to NYC on a weekday this week. The only place we ‘need’ to visit that day is the south street seaport area. We will wander around a bit to see other sights but they aren’t core to our trip. Where’s the best place to leave my car and switch to trains, or whatever? Family trip with 4 people, so we aren’t going to do amtrack the whole way (too expensive), so the plan is to drive to as close is reasonable then switch to trains, unless there is a better way. I did see a few things about reserving parking spaces etc - is that worth doing? Any other tips to get around the city? We aren’t complete strangers to the city, but the more we know before we get there the better off we’ll be.

Thanks!

I’m not clear on which direction you’re coming from (north or south of NYC), but I’ve usually used the Port Imperial ferry terminal in Weehawken, NJ. It has worked quite nicely the several times I’ve used it over the years.

We are coming from the northeast (north and east of NYC) - driving down from the Boston MA area, so a NJ ferry is probably the wrong way.

As much as this may be true, we have a particular destination as a treat for our kids that is in NYC, so it can’t be avoided this day. We have taken a train in from LI before, but we were also staying with someone near a train station so it was easy.

Long Island? You mean Eastern Queens right?

Ah, ok, I was thinking geographical region rather than direction.

We tend to consider the eastern parts of PA and NY, and NJ as part of the Northeast in here PA (as correct or incorrect as that may be); MA, while part of the Northeast, is also New England to us.

There is cheap parking over on 12 Street, generally - the closer you get to Central Park the more expensive. South Street Seaport might have low rates, just come down the FDR.

Have lunch at Eisenberg’s on lower 5th Avenue - real egg creams for the kids, and pastrami for the adults.

I can’t speak for coming down from Boston, but your best bet would be to look at Metro-North stations and finding a convenient one to park at and take the train. You may just want to bite the bullet and pay for parking in the city, though.

Yeah, that’s the sort of info I was hoping to get - what stations are easy and/or not too expensive etc. but it seems like parking in the city might not actually be that hard.

Do parking garages around here take reservations, or is there even such a thing? Or do they not usually get full?

I’ve never heard of them taking reservations - generally first-come-first-served. When I was driving up from DC in the late 90s, I never had a problem finding a garage.

Great, thanks. I’m hoping that with it being vacation week the garages won’t be full.
